Horse and owner

Every horse owner wants a happy and healthy horse. If the animal is ill, we suffer with it and are very worried. There is a cause for many of the common illnesses in horses that we can combat:

Toxins in the organism

Just like us humans, our horses are exposed to an increasing amount of toxins - environmental toxins such as pesticides and heavy metals. This can lead to an overload of the body's own detoxification mechanisms. Like the human body, the equine organism also has its own detoxification system. This involves the liver, kidneys, intestines, respiratory system, skin and hooves as horny appendages of the skin. Together they work to rid the body of toxins and harmful substances.

If too many toxins enter the body at once or if the detoxification system is disrupted, toxins remain in the body and accumulate in the organism. Stored toxins cause cell damage throughout the body and thus impair cell function. They weaken the immune system, unbalance the intestinal flora and attack nerves and muscles. Common equine diseases such as colic, laminitis, laminitis, respiratory problems, allergies, skin eczema, eye inflammation and joint problems have their origin in toxins that are stored in the body.

Common horse diseases

The spectrum of horse diseases is broad. Here is an overview of some typical diseases.

Colic

In colic, the horse has cramp-like abdominal pain. Colic itself is not a disease, but a symptom of a disorder in the digestive tract. Colic can be life-threatening.

Mauke

Mauke (also known as fetlock eczema) is a bacterial inflammation of the skin in the fetlock bend. Germs penetrate through defects in the skin barrier and trigger inflammation.

Laminitis

Laminitis is a very painful inflammation of the hoof corium. The periosteum connects the coffin bone to the horn capsule. As a result of the inflammation, there is severe swelling under the horn capsule and severe pressure pain occurs. In addition, blood circulation in the hoof is impaired.

Cough

A distinction is made between acute and chronic coughs. An acute cough is a bacterial or viral infection of the respiratory tract. A chronic cough is a non-infectious disease of the deeper respiratory tract. Even if animals affected by chronic coughing often only cough when trotting, their lung function and therefore their performance are considerably impaired. Possible causes include fungal spores in hay or straw, infestation with lungworms or an allergy.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a chronic inflammation of the joints. The horse is in pain and therefore goes lame. It mainly affects older animals, ponies and sport horses that are subjected to heavy strain.

Sweet itch

Sweet itch is an allergic reaction to substances in the saliva of certain biting insects. Affected animals suffer from severe itching. Severe rubbing of the itchy areas of skin can result in loss of fur or skin infections.

Periodic eye inflammation

Periodic ocular inflammation (also known as moon blindness) is an inflammation of the vascular membrane in the eye. The inflammation occurs recurrently in episodes and can result in blindness.

Fighting toxins - preventing disease

The cause of many diseases in our horses is excessive exposure to toxins. You can prevent illness by relieving the animal's detoxification system. There are two things you can do:

  1. You can try to reduce the sources of toxins.
  2. You can use detoxifying food supplements to help your pet's body get rid of toxins.

What sources of poisoning are there?

Horses are exposed to various sources of poisoning. If too many of these act together, the body's own detoxification system reaches its limits and not all harmful substances can be eliminated. It therefore makes sense to recognize the sources of poisoning and to ensure that the animals are exposed to as few toxins as possible.

  • Toxins in grass and roughage
Fresh grass as well as hay and straw can contain poisonous plants such as ragwort, lily of the valley, marsh horsetail or autumn crocus. Ergot, a fungus that can infect grasses and cereals, is particularly highly toxic.
  • Molds and bacteria in hay
Hay that is not sufficiently dried out is a breeding ground for microorganisms such as mold and bacteria that are harmful to horse health. Mycotoxins in particular, formed by mold fungi, put a strain on the liver and kidneys.
  • Aflatoxins in horse feed
Aflatoxins are powerful toxins produced by certain types of mold. Oilseeds, maize, wheat and rolled oats are often contaminated. The toxins are often formed when the feed is stored incorrectly.
  • Pesticides in animal feed
Various pesticides are used in the cultivation of cereals, herbs, meadows and fruit, which can have a toxic effect on horses. Pesticides contaminate many feedstuffs. Although there are maximum exposure limits for the individual toxins, it is not known what effects the combination of several toxins in one feed has on the horse's organism.
  • Heavy metals in water
In some regions, drinking water contains high concentrations of heavy metals. Some of them are harmful to health: for example lead, cadmium, copper, nickel, mercury and zinc. The body's own detoxification system cannot remove heavy metals well, so they are stored in the body.
  • Digestive disorders
A diet containing too much fructan, sugar or starch leads to digestive disorders. On the one hand, this results in damage to the intestinal mucosa. On the other hand, the intestinal flora changes and many intestinal bacteria die off. The decay of intestinal bacteria produces endotoxins. As the damaged intestinal mucosa can no longer fulfill its protective function, these toxins enter the horse's organism.
  • Metabolic diseases and infections
Metabolic diseases such as Equine Cushing's Syndrome (ECS), viral infections or bacterial infections result in an accumulation of metabolic toxins that put a strain on the body's own detoxification system.
  • Medication
Medication, antibiotics and vaccinations help the body to cope with or prevent illness, but they also put a strain on the detoxification organs.

Signs that the detoxification system is overloaded

These symptoms can indicate that the body's own detoxification system is overloaded and toxins are not being removed sufficiently on their own.

  • Weight problems:
Unexplained weight gain or unexplained weight loss
  • Digestive problems:
    Watery stools, diarrhea, foul-smelling feces
  • Fatigue:
    Frequent yawning, loss of performance
  • Skin problems:
    sweet itch, skin fungus
  • Poor hooves:
poor growth, cracks, broken hooves, split horns
  • Problems with shedding:
Winter coat is not shed or not shed completely, itching, bald patches
  • Metabolic disorders:
For example, Cushing's disease, laminitis, equine metabolic syndrome (EMS)

How can I detoxify my horse?

Is your horse showing these symptoms? Then detoxification is indicated. You can detoxify your horse yourself by feeding it. A detox treatment stimulates the elimination of toxins, cleanses the blood and strengthens the immune system.
Various plants are known for their detoxifying effect, for example nettle, dandelion or goldenrod.
But be careful: some of these plants are toxic in excessive doses. So feed a balanced feed supplement with a safe formula.
Even if your horse shows no worrying symptoms and is healthy, regular detoxification treatments are possible and sensible. By supporting the animal's own detoxification system, you relieve the detoxification organs and strengthen the organism. This reduces susceptibility to disease and actively promotes preventative healthcare.

Bill & COO by ROOT gets to the root of horse health problems

With Bill & Coo, the company ROOT offers a product line with important nutritional supplements for animals. The basic idea of ROOT is to get to the root of health problems. ROOT's products are designed to combat harmful substances such as toxins and chemicals that cause disease and improve whole body health. ROOT products are natural, non-GMO, gluten-free and vegan.
PURE CLEAN PETS is a specially developed formula that binds toxins and heavy metals, which are then excreted in the urine. The starting material of PURE CLEAN PETS is clinoptilotite, a volcanic mineral from the zeolite group with a high concentration of silicon dioxide. Clinoptilotite has detoxifying properties, supports and improves intestinal health and the absorption of nutrients.

The products from Bill & Coo by ROOT at a glance

Bill & Coo by ROOT offers four nutritional supplements that strengthen your horse's health in different ways. They can be mixed into the feed and used individually or in combination.

Bill & Coo by ROOT - Pure Clean Pets

Pure Clean Pets is the animal-friendly version of Clean Slate. It safely and effectively removes environmental toxins and heavy metals from the animal's body.

Bill & Co by ROOT - Defend your Pet

Defend Your Pet was developed to protect animals from ageing and disease. Essential minerals, trace elements and vitamins protect the metabolism from an imbalance between free radicals and radical scavengers (oxidative stress). Oxidative stress can cause inflammation and disease.

Bill & Coo by ROOT - Longer Lives

Longer Lives aims to strengthen the heart, liver, joints, bones, skin and digestive system of animals. The formula of bovine collagen peptide and beetroot powder builds up the microbiome - i.e. the animal's colonization with microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses - and thus supports the immune system.

Bill & Coo by ROOT - Anigreens Prebiotic Blend

Anigreen supports intestinal health with a high proportion of selected dietary fibers. It has a positive effect on the colonization of the intestinal flora with friendly bacteria, helps with digestive disorders and inflammatory reactions and supports the immune system.

Conclusion

With increasing environmental pollution with toxins, the detoxification system of horses needs our support. With the products from Bill & Coo by ROOT, you can detoxify your horse naturally and safely and strengthen its health.
