They also contain vitamins C and A, potassium, calcium and phosphorus.

The abundant vitamin A content in radishes serves as an important antioxidant, which is beneficial for eyesight. In addition, the vitamin K contained in radishes plays a crucial role in bone health and blood clotting. Radishes are also rich in fiber, which aids digestion.

Anti-inflammatory and antibacterial

Radishes are known for their anti-inflammatory properties and can be helpful in the treatment and prevention of chronic diseases such as arthritis, cancer, arteriosclerosis and high blood pressure.

The health-promoting ingredients in radishes, which include glucosinolates, isothiocyanates and polyphenols, have been shown to be particularly effective. One study showed that isothiocyanates in particular have a strong antibacterial effect and can be up to 87 percent effective against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. When combined with conventional antibiotics, they can significantly increase their effectiveness.

Cancer prevention

Radishes are not only healthy, they also have properties that can help prevent cancer. A scientific study foundthat the isothiocyanates in radishes can inhibit the growth and spread of tumors. They do this by influencing various proteins and signaling pathways in the body, which in turn can prevent the development of different types of tumors.

Another important aspect is the high vitamin C content in radishes. Vitamin C is known to prevent and contain the proliferation of cancer cells. Radishes are also rich in flavonoids, especially anthocyanins. These substances have an antioxidant effect and have cancer-preventing properties. One study also found that anthocyanins have the potential to reduce the resistance of cancer cells to various drugs.

Blood sugar lowering

Radishes are not only delicious, they can also have a positive effect on blood sugar levels. One study indicated that radishes help to protect the body from harmful oxidation processes, which is particularly important for people with diabetes. They help the body to process and utilize sugar better, which leads to a more balanced blood sugar regulation. Radishes also reduce the absorption of sugar in the intestine, which also helps to stabilize blood sugar levels.

Caution when eating radishes

Although radishes offer numerous benefits, there are some considerations to keep in mind when eating them.

  • Eating raw radishes can potentially irritate the digestive tract. People with conditions such as peptic ulcers or gastritis should be aware of this and avoid eating raw radishes.
  • People taking anticoagulants should moderate their radish consumption due to the blood-clotting properties of vitamin K in radishes.
