Difference Web2 vs. Web3 - Simply explained
Difference Web2 vs. Web3
From the interactive Internet to the decentralized economy. Find out why Web3 is far more than just a technical update.
The internet has changed fundamentally. While Web1 mainly offered static content and Web2 created centralized platforms, Web3 is based on decentralization and ownership.
But what is the real difference?
1. control over data & identity
Web2 (Status Quo)
Data is stored centrally. Large platforms manage user accounts, content and payment data. The control lies with companies - users provide data, platforms monetize it.
- Login by e-mail & password
- Identity is platform-bound
- Platform can block access at any time
Web3 (future)
Data is organized decentrally. There is no single instance with complete control. Users access their information via cryptographic keys.
- Wallet-based identity
- Cryptographic keys instead of passwords
- Identity is platform-independent (SSI)
2. ownership & business models
Ownership on the Web2
Content is usually license-based. You use a service, but own neither the account nor the assets stored there in a legal or technical sense.
Model: Advertising & data sales.
Ownership on the web3
Digital assets are tokenized. Ownership is immutably documented on the blockchain and technically freely transferable.
Model: Token economies & peer-to-peer.
Web2 vs. Web3 - Direct comparison
| Feature | Web2 | Web3 |
|---|---|---|
| Infrastructure | Central server / cloud | Decentralized networks (P2P) |
| Data sovereignty | Belong to the platforms | Belong to the users |
| Identity | Third-party provider (Google/FB) | Self-managed (Wallet) |
| Changes | Administrative / One-sided | Consensus-based (governance) |
| Core model | Attention economy | Property economy |
Why this difference is strategically relevant
The shift towards Web3 not only affects technology, but also fundamental governance structures in society. It is about the question of who grants access in a digital world and who can withdraw it.
Web3 is not a short-term fad, but a structural development of the digital architecture - towards more sovereignty and security.
